After last nights evening of party classic playlist at Katie & James wedding celebration we were back out on the road nice at midday for the 90 minute journey down to Lythe Hill Hotel on the Surrey/Hampshire border for Gabby & Joe’s wedding. 90’s house fan Gabby had put forward some great song selections for the evening giving me the opportunity to build a dance based playlist that also included UK Garage, Latest Dance and some R&B and Hip Hop from the 90’s onwards …

We arrived at the venue bang on schedule at 2pm just in time to see the bride make her way towards to wedding ceremony, this gave us about 45 minutes to get all the equipment into the Garden Room suite before the guests returned to use the bar.  The Garden Room can cater for wedding breakfasts of up to 128 guests, this also includes an outdoor licensed wedding pavilion overlooking the lake, however with rain in the air the ceremony took place indoors on this occasion. I believe the venue also has a marquee option during the summer months.

If your reading this as a DJ or a Band then access into the Garden Room isn’t the easiest so give yourself  plenty of time, ideally you want to be getting access before the meal so its all done while the guests are attending the ceremony. You can only get as near as the car park as there are a couple of cement bollards blocking access to the suite, there’s a short walk through then up around 5 stairs where you will then be guided round to the left into a room that adjoins the Garden Room. What you can then do is set your equipment up in that particualar room and actually DJ from there in the evening …during the room turnaround you can then pull back the curtain to reveal the booth. If you are providing background music during the meal then there is enough room to install a single speaker and then work with the venue to monitor the volume.

The Garden Room has some barn characteristics but with a glass roof, there is no sound limiter in the room. The dancefloor is laid under the carpet which is revealed during the room turnaround when you can then set up the speakers and lighting in the room. The floor is located very close to the wall so I opted to play from the adjoining room as the booth and lighting would have taken up too much of the floor. This works really well for a DJ but not sure how it would work for a band who would require a lot more space. We didn’t install the arch on this occasion as it wouldn’t have tied in with the room with the booth being in a seperate room, so we installed four plinths around the dancefloor which we uplit and placed moving lights on top of them which worked really well.

With the speaker being in the room for the “Ibiza Chillout” background music during the meal we also managed to accommodate one of the ushers who was setting up a plasma tv and laptop for some video messages which were going to be played out as part of the speeches, we just ran an ipod lead into the laptop and then into the speakers rather than him having to worry about setting up a pair of desktop speakers.

The wedding breakfast actually started about 20 minutes ahead of schedule and after a very efficient service everything (including the speeches) was wrapped up by around 6pm which gave everyone an opportunity to chill out at the bar or in their hotel rooms. The bar is located just outside the room but in the evening the venue open up some side doors in the garden room so everything is nice and close to the disco.

Gabby and Joe took their first dance around 745pm to Otis Redding’s “Thats How Strong My Love Is” …for the first hour or so we catered for the older guests so they could enjoy themselves before the dance music started. Gabby’s hen do request “La Camisa Negra” by Juanes went down well with all the girls on the floor and we went into the 90’s from there before switching to the UK Garage. We held back Gabby’s 90’s dance section until after the 30 minute break for the the Chinese Lanterns which followed the buffet and from then onwards we had a cracking mixing spell of some massive clubbing tunes from the 90’s including Sandy B, Clivillés & Cole, The Bucketheads, Nush, Sneaker Pimps, Tori Amos, Happy Clappers, Everything But the Girl, 187 Lockdown, Armand Van Helden, De’Lacy, Snap, CJ Bolland, Fat Boy Slim and Apollo 440 …certainly a great spell of the night, havn’t played 187 Lockdown in ages …really took me back that one.

The “fake” last song was “Perfect Day” by Lou Reed before we finished off with “Bohemian Rhapsody” as the encore, its not a song I would usually play during a set as for long periods its a sing a long track rather than something to dance to but it works really well as the last song following a bit of Indie Rock once everyone’s in the singing mode.

And so another weekend came to and end …after a lengthy pack up and journey back we didn’t get back till around 4am Monday morning but it had been an enjoyable and another hugely successful weekend with a very busy September now well under way. Congratulations to Gabby &  Joe and all the best for your honeymoon.

We have another five weddings on next weekend so just enough time now for me to get down to the dentists after working all weekend on a diet of Panadol and Nurofen, check back soon for more blogs and pics.
