Cracking night this one to kick off July …and a somewhat unexpected one too as we only learnt about the gig at 2pm that afternoon.

I was due to leave Saturday morning for a wedding in Hampshire and then onto Hastings on Sunday so had taken the Friday off  originally in preparation for a full on weekend and 8 hours worth of travelling but I got a call early in the afternoon asking if I could help out as the bride & groom had been let down. With everything organised long in advance for the weekend and with no plans I went straight down to Ashford to meet up with my contact David who was laying a white starlit dance floor, David had managed to source the couples first dance and playlist requests so witrh the set up completed by 7pm and the guests due in after the daytime in the hotel part of the establishment I had a good half an hour to get the tunes organised.

Also on the bill tonight were a Soul/Motown band with a sound engineer, so space was at a bit of a premium as it’s not the largest room by any means, but between the 5 of us we managed to come up with a layout that worked for everyone and it was down to me to play the first couple of songs of the night before handing over to singer Roy and his backing vocalists to get the party started with a brilliant hours set of classic Motown and Soul, it went down so well they wouldn’t let him leave and he ended up singing an additional two numbers for the wedding party who were in full swing by the end.

It was a strange one for me because I usually get to have a fair bit of contact with clients in the build up to a wedding but it was very much like in my early days as a DJ when I had an agent and would go into a gig cold. I don’t really like that because it’s good to have built a rapport with clients beforehand, other than knowing their surname for the first dance I will never know what their names were unless they stumble across this blog one day and leave me a comment.

Having said that I don’t usually get to meet the guests beforehand unless I’m providing a SoundProof package so it was the usual wedding scenario playing the bride and grooms requests and dropping my own choices and guest requests into the set at the appropriate time throughout the night.

As far as the bride and grooms requests were concerned I was really pleased to see the playlist when I arrived which consisted of mainly dance based music with a few of the brides 80’s favourites thrown in for good measure. It was going so well that at midnight guests wanted me to stay on but discussions with the venue didn’t prove fruitful and unfortunately we had to finish at the scheduled time of 12.

So the first night of the weekend proved to be something of a whirlwind experience but as always at Eastwell Manor a great night and it was straight back home for some much needed rest before tomorrows 5 hour round trip down to Redenham near Southampton for Rachel & Michael’s wedding. All the best to Mr & Mrs Ingram, if you stumble across this blog I hope you had a great night and honeymoon …drop us some feedback and do let us know your names 😀
