The weekend began with Grace & Rob’s wedding reception on a bitterly cold night in Hampshire at The Elvetham Hotel, a stunning 19th Century mansion located close to the M3. It was my first visit to this venue and we loved every minute of this one.
The disco is staged in “The Morning Room”, we gained access at around 4.30 which gave us a good 3 hours to set up and dress the room. It’s quite a small dark narrow room, the dancefloor is a decent size so this fills virtually all of the available floor space but there’s a good amount of space at the back of the room to set up equipment in front of the bay window. We used some Blue & Teal Creative Mood Lighting to highlight the fireplace, the paintings on the wall, curtains and the dark corners to give the room a party feel, we chose not to go for the overhead lighting as the arch for the lights wouldn’t of been in keeping with the room so we kept it simple and discreet. For DJs info, access to the room is easy, you park alongside the wall and its a very short walk through to the side door so you don’t need to transport kit through the hotel, there is no sound limiter and there is one smoke detector at the other end of the room, we used vapour in the smoke machine in small doses throughout the evening and it didn’t cause any problems to the detector. The bar is in the room next door and there is an adjoining door so you will need to keep that area clear of speakers.
“Iris” went down a storm
It was a night which started and ended with The Killers …one of the bride and grooms favourite bands. In the build up to the wedding, the couple had pondered over “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls as their first dance, but just 48 hours before the wedding they opted to go for “Read my Mind” by The Killers which proved a real hit as friends and family poured onto the floor to celebrate with the newleyweds. I held back “Iris” for later on as whenever there’s a dilemma over a first dance its always good to surprise the couple by playing it right at the end of the night when everyone is on a high.
We kept the sounds fresh and recent from the outset in accordance with Grace and Robs preferences, there were some early requests also for Motown but with the buffet just around the corner at 9pm we decided to hold these back for afterwards which proved to be a good decision as this lit the blue touchpaper for an amazing last 150 minutes and a packed dancefloor right through until the end of the night. The energy levels gained from the buffet all got a bit too much for one partygoer wearing a very stylish pair of “spats”, he decided to cut a move which involved balancing one of his spats on the booth only to see the whole lot come crashing down much to the amusement of everybody 😀 …
