New Years Eve 2012, never to be forgotten by anyone who was there !
Carly had forwarded on her music selections around 4 weeks before the wedding which gave me plenty of time to prepare for the biggest night of the year, it was probably one of the largest selections of garage music I have ever had through for a wedding …and a proper selection of real UK garage that had the Georgian Mansion absolutely rocking from start to finish. If you have been a reveler at the South London clubs since the 90s then you would of been in your element, check out some of the tunes on the playlist under this review.
Carly’s specific instructions were to play the party music first up incorporating any requests into it, then move onto the house and garage music (which dominated the playlist). During the last hour before midnight I gave regular time updates so guests could keep their glasses charged and at 11:59 I hit a specially prepared Space Age countdown giving party goers a minute to take up their final positions.
As the evening ebbed and flowed it proved to be a night full of characters, the brides brother clearly had some MC’ing skills of his own as he occasionally borrowed the mic to belt out “South London Style” appreciation to party goers packing the dance floor …not to be outdone was one of the groomsmen who robbed the Choice Entertainment camera and went on his own personal photographing spree among the guests for about half an hour, I’m looking forward to seeing the end result of that once the photos are produced.
The venue itself is stunning house, a beautifully whitewashed mansion with attractive front lawn and plenty of parking available set in the lush Belair West Dulwich parkland. The wedding breakfast takes place in the first room on the left, I didn’t really get a proper look at that room but it had a mirrored entrance which looked pretty classy, there’s a spiral staircase leading both upstairs and down to the toilets on the lower ground floor …I think the disco normally sets up in the room on the right but on this occasion this was being used by a magician to entertain the kids and the room has a bar in it so its quite small so Carly switched this to one of the unused upstairs rooms which proved to be a smart decision …ok it was extra work getting everything up the stairs but if your planning a major event then its worth thinking through these things and “getting it right”, it was a much larger environment for around 150 guests plus there was still a bar in the adjacent room, also a nice little terrace leading off the main room onto a balcony for smokers. Acoustically the room sounded great with the EV speakers we are now using and we managed to get a full light show up onto the trussing which looked great against the white walls, there is a smoke detector in the room but this didn’t cause any problems thanks to a bit of gaffer tape. We also set up some uplighting in there and as evening guests arrived there was a fantastic pink glow to the party room which stood out very nicely against the white of the house.
For a wedding on New Years Eve this was the perfect combination, there was something for everyone but ultimately Carly & Durrands desire to let garage rule the night was an off the scale success because they gave the crowd exactly what they wanted and at 2am they still wanted more, this could have roared on for hours without a doubt. I woke up on New Years Day ridiculously early at 830am after 3 whole hours sleep and despite an early visit to McDonalds to grab a couple of sausage and egg McMuffins I then crashed out with a major headache missing the short journey to Watford to watch Charlton (had a match ticket and everything) …low and behold as sods law would have it, they turned it on in my absence and won 4-3 after being behind twice …gutted 🙁 but the night before was worth it …and that’s saying something !
