I blogged it last week as “Kisstory On The Way” and it more than exceeded my high expectations 🙂 Sharon said in the build up to the party, “I guess I’ve never grown out of the 90’s, but if I’m going to be 40 then I’m gonna go with a bang”, well never was a truer word said ! I had prepared a much more in depth playlist than usual as 90’s South London club music is an area close to my heart, sometimes you have to be prepared to change things around on the night to accommodate other guests but this was never going to be the case at this one …everyone had a blast including Sharon’s fab dad Bill. There were a few older 70’s tunes on the list and later on a few of the guests wanted some “cheesy party tunes”, but it didn’t last long, Sharon had made her intentions clear with the playlist which dominated the night.
From the moment Sharon, her daughter and entourage of friends walked in the door it was very clear that we were going to recreate something very special from our mispent youth at places like Bibas, Langtreys, Deja Vu and what really impressed me was that I was playing a UK garage tune as they walked in and Sharon’s daughter and friends immediately started singing and dancing to a song that most teenagers would never have heard of, so massive respect to Sharon for bringing up her kids loving music that framed the 90’s clubbing era. This happened a few weeks ago at Jades 18th as she was very much into the 80’s house and soul her dad (a dj himself) brought her up on.
I’d also like to use this review to say a huge thanks to Sharon for giving me the gig, it had been booked in quite a long time ago and an event I was really looking to as it gave me an opportunity to return to my roots in Sidcup which meant a lot to me. I moved south to Rochester 10 years ago as property prices in South London were too high, I still have family in the area and whenever I go back there or via on the way to Charlton I feel like I’ve gone home. I’d love to get back that way in the future because “theres no place like …” ! The venue at Footscray Social Club presented many memories from me also as I once used to drive the 51 bus route that passes the club, in fact (and I can say this now), I once ran a 51 bus back into Bexleyheath Bus Garage 4 hours early on a Saturday night in 2001 so I could go out clubbing to Deja Vu 😀 (first slapped wrist) …I was born at Queen Marys and went to school at St Marys and Josephs (many slapped wrists), one of my best mates in the 90’s lived on Sidcup Hill and I remember we got ourselves into a spot of bother one night near the Mary Rose Pub in nearby St Mary Cray which resulted in a telling off at Orpington Police Station (another slapped you know what) …and when I ran the Marathon in 94 I was living in New Eltham and working at Cafe Bar on Nugent Industrial Estate (now a retail park), I spent numerous nights in Sidcup, Eltham, Orpington and Chislehurst plying my trade in the local pubs as a really bad wannabe casanova lol, in fact I didn’t realise how fond of the place I was at the time until I started writing this, it’s only when you leave and go back you really appreciate your identity …so many memories.
Footscray Social Club is excellent with nice easy access for DJs, straight through the door and your on the stage, also I had a word with the bar manager before the gig and he very kindly allowed me to tape up the smoke sensor so I could ensure that the light show was as good as the music. You don’t need a large sound system, 1000 watts will do you easily, lucky mine are 2000 as it gave me a chance to get the bass up a bit more. The staff were really nice and helpful and the food looked pretty damn good too for a 40th, so if you are looking for a great venue in or around the Sidcup area then check this place out for sure, it’s a nice exclusive venue.
On a night of many highlights, too many to mention …(you had to be there really), Sharon’s dad Bill gave me a CD at the start and asked me to play the track on there at some point throughout the evening for himself and Sharon. I was so wrapped up in the euphoria of the night (or maybe it was the beer I had consumed earlier that day at The Valley, Charlton v Brighton – 2-2 for the record btw) that I cant quite remember what the track represented but I’m pretty sure it was the song that was playing when Sharon was born (Lewisham Hospital I believe) so that was a special moment.
special moment for sharon and dad bill
At the final whistle of a stonking night Sharon and I vowed to stay in touch, I think I even promised to DJ one of her house parties in the future for free (Jeez I must of been on a high lol), anyway I hope that happens one day because this party was a long term memory for me and a really great group of people. Can’t wait for her 41st, 42nd, 43rd …. Happy Christmas x
